There was also many racial tensions throughout New York. Youth Gangs were on every corner and although it was tough being raised in an urban environment we still made the most out of it Everyone had to be strong because of all the pressure from outlaw kids who were rough and in gangs causing wild and crazy mayhem. Most were plagued with social problems either within their family or in school.
I had to look for activities to keep me out of trouble and keep my mind on the right track. Things like playing skellies, or spinning tops. But there was always the extra urge to do more, to dare mighty things and to achieve great conquests. In my neighborhood the most aggressive basketball, stick ball and football jocks combed the streets for competition. It came along in the form of my friends like Brother Love 333, Tusky, Limpy, Jay, Apache, and Chino 125. From other streets close by came the Dekalb Boy's, the Stockholm boys and the Hart St Boys.
My real writing started with black, blue, red and green flair pens and then multi-colored doodle markers in blank page art books that were later coined as black books. Everyone had a hotshot nicknames to depict they're attitude. I remember Timex, Flowers-Dice, Spin, and Fuzz as being a few of them. I was called Hotstuff, and my brothers called themselves Hawkeye 737, PBX 1,and Jay 1. I later started searching for a unique identity, a fly name that I could use to psyche myself out with, one that sounds sporty and aggressive and got respect from the other street jocks.
